Bringing them home

Learning about the National Inquiry into the Separation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children from Their Families

The Minister for Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs, The Hon Jenny Macklin MP, launched the Australian Human Rights Commission'sUs Taken-Away Kids magazine in Sydney on 11 December 2007.

Compiled to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the ‘Bringing them home’ report, the magazine represents artwork and stories from members of the ‘Stolen Generations’ throughout Australia and serves as a testament to the resilience of Aboriginal people and their ability to triumph in the face of despair.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner Tom Calma also launched the updated version of the Commission’s very popular ‘Bringing them home’ educational package.

Commissioner Calma also delivered the first of a series of headline speeches setting out an agenda for change for Indigenous affairs.

In the series, titled Essentials for Social Justice, the first speech, ‘Sorry’ will discuss the importance of saying sorry to Aboriginal people who were forcibly removed from their families and the needs of the ‘Stolen Generations.’

Speakers:

The Hon Jenny Macklin MP, Minister for Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs.

Tom Calma, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner.

Alec Kruger, author of ‘Alone on the Soaks’ – and member of the Central Australian Stolen Generations in Alice Springs.
